Why Me?

*Please read this entire post before you judge! :)

Have you ever thought to yourself, "why me?"
Because I have.

This week, I found the perfect job: designing children's rooms for an upscale little boutique right by our house.
Then I found out that it had been filled.
Then I got a call saying that it was open.
Then I went in for an interview and found out that by "designing children's rooms" the owner really meant, "sitting behind a desk and organizing my accounting statements and figuring out my taxes that I haven't paid in 4 years."
(side note: Dad - this lady asked me if I had taken any accounting classes in college!! Ha! I told her yes. And left it at that. :)
Why me?

Then I got a parking ticket for staying at the Science Center with my kids for 4 MINUTES too long!
Why me?

Then I applied for a job waitressing at the Cheesecake Factory.
You know, that classy, delicious, awesomely good restaurant where the waitresses make bank!?
Yea, that one.
I had the best interview of my life and was hired on the spot.
I had to turn it down the next day because they would not budge on their policy of required Sundays.
Why me?

Then I spent a morning snuggling in bed with Brooklyn who insisted that I scratch her back while we cuddle. I had two special little helpers assist me in making the biggest mess our kitchen has ever seen and a monkey bread catastrophe that should go down in the history books. I chased our girls around the backyard until one of them (this one)
stepped in dog poop and we had to call it a day. I got to go on a nature walk with our family and explain to Brooklyn why trees grow so tall and help Aubrey throw the rocks just far enough into the pond that they splash without getting her feet wet. I got to come home and give us girls a pedicure with the foot scrub that Luke bought me for Mother's Day at the $1 store.
And I got to drive home from church and listen to Brooklyn asking Aubrey, "Aubey, what you do at church? You pay wiff fiends? You pay wiff bubbles? You learn 'bout Jesus? Jesus got owies. You sing songs?" Then I get to go home and put our girls down for a nap just to find myself kneeling outside their bedroom door 10 minutes later and hearing them laugh so hard they can hardly breathe. Then I get to put them to bed one more time and hear Brooklyn say as I leave her room, "I love you Mommy."

And all I can think is:
"Why me?"

I remember thinking

when I was young, that I was so different from my mom.
She liked to run.
I couldn't run down the block without stopping.
She ate salad for every meal.
I couldn't eat salad if it was the last eatable item on Earth.
She was late to everything.
I couldn't stand that.
And she was also the best mom ever.

Now that I have grown up and become a mom too, I realized a few days ago that something very strange has happened.

I go running twice a week.
I eat salad every day.
I'm always late.

But she's still the best mom ever.

Some things never change.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms in our lives.
Kari, Lori, Karen, Marty, Beth, and Geniel.
We love you.
