Kickin' and Screaming

Every soccer season so far has been great.  (Minus the one where Brooklyn's ENTIRE team didn't score a single goal until the very last game.  That one wasn't great at all.)
But this season was amazing.
The girls both flourished this year.  Aubrey learned about playing positions and gained some serious slide-tackling skills.  Brooklyn discovered a love for playing goalie (and WOW is she a good goalie!).
At one particular game, Brooklyn scored two goals (her first ever!!!) and Aubrey scored a goal right afterwards.
That was a magical game.
And a magical season.

Let's Go Glamping!

It's no surprise that we like the great outdoors.  So, when the Achievement Day Leaders from church said camping, the kids came running.  And when they said glamping, I came skipping (actually waddling - because honestly, I am 24 weeks pregnant and I look like I could deliver tomorrow).
We had THE greatest time.
Like reeeeeally.  THE best time.
Aubrey even said this was the best day of her life.  Even better than the cruise.
That, my dears, means it was pretty darn great.

The Things the Little Bird Told Me

One day a hummingbird moved into our backyard.  She just up and plopped herself right there on the third light from the left of our hanging porch lights that I bought on clearance because they reminded me of the Car's Ride at Disneyland.
The hummingbird was sweet and content and we had a mutual affection, even though Cameron almost accidentally destroyed her with the broom that one time.  I'd find myself looking out my kitchen window constantly wondering what life as a humming bird might be like.
No bath time, no dinner to make, no homework problems to look up on the internet (because you cannot for the life of you remember how many pints are in a stupid gallon), no toilets to clean, no kids running in and out and never, EVER, shutting the dang front door.

And then one day, we discovered that bird's sneaky little secret.
2 tic-tac sized miniature white eggs.
(gasp!!!)
I again found myself gazing at her thorough my kitchen window.
Lucky little bird.  She had it so easy.  No morning sickness, no gaining 20 lbs. in a month, no having to worry about peeing your pants in the cereal aisle, no stretch marks, no varicose veins, no trying unsuccessfully to squeeze herself into her old fat-jeans.  She just got to sit there and look happy.
That little jerk.
And then one day those eggs became birds.  Just like that.
No pushing, no epidural, no stitches, no messhy adult disposable underwear, no 4 inches of excess belly flab.
She had it so easy, that ungrateful little lark.

We watched intently while her two hairless little jelly beans developed into mini spiky-haired birds.
Eventually they got too big to share such a tiny little nest and mom got the boot.  She moved to the much less glamorous wire and perched herself at their side.  It was then that I decided I could kind of relate to her.  She had to sacrifice a few comforts too.  She had to provide food and protect from danger.  ("Danger" is what I named the neighbors hideous white cat who desperately wanted to make them her mid-day snack.)  She probably worried irrational worries and wondered if she was doing a good job.
She probably lost sleep over what the future holds and wished she could make it certain.  She probably wondered if she had taught her little ones everything they'll need to know and sometimes even panics that they might not listen to her warnings at some future point.
She probably wonders if the worms are nutritious enough, or maybe they're too nutritious, or maybe they should be eating one more serving of worms per day.  Or maybe one less...

I continued watching them out of my kitchen window and still found myself vaguely jealous of life as a mommy hummingbird.

It was all just so unfair.

She just sat and relaxed while I scrubbed dirty dishes of a dinner no one liked in a 7-year old pajama shirt (that belonged to my husband until last week when this belly demanded it) while the kid performed miniature acts of terrorism and demolished a clean house that eventually I knew I'd have to clean up by bending over and then bracing myself on my knees to even have a chance of getting back up.
Glamorous. I know.
And then one day, it happened.
The birds were gone.
Just gone.

One of the babies flapped it's wings, lifted itself out of the nest, looked down, and off it went.
And then the other did too.
It had been two weeks at most.
And they were gone.
G o n e.
And then, all the sudden, I did not envy that mother.  Not at all.
In fact, I ached for that poor little mom.  She certainly hadn't realized it would be so short.  She couldn't have gotten the time with them that she desired.
They were gone and her job was done.
Unfair indeed.

I still find myself instinctively glancing out my kitchen window at that tiny empty nest and feeling a flood of gratitude for the gift of time with my children.
The days are long, but wow, the years are short.
So for now, I'm going to soak up the seconds and the minutes and the hours and the days and be grateful for every crazy, wild, and beautiful moment.
Happy Mother's Day.

TOOT TOOOOOT!!

That was the sound of me tooting my own horn.
(Meaning I'm about to seriously and shamelessly brag about ourselves and proclaim to the world the limitlessness of our awesomeness.)
Ready?

My husband is quite possibly the most amazing man on the planet.
He really is.
For example, last week he slayed a ridiculously hard test (and I mean SLAYED it) + accepted the position of chief resident (it's a BIIIIIG deal) + played 2,300 games of tether ball and didn't loose a single one + worked countless hours as the best doc in town + signed up for his second marathon + got offered interviews to every fellowship he applied for + took care of all the stuff his tired and pregnant wife was too lazy to do + mowed the lawn (and looked dang sexy doing it).
I just wanted you to know that I married the smartest, most talented,  hunkiest, most dedicated and amazing man in the world.
Toot.  Toot.

A Day With Cameron

The other day I started thinking about how I have been slacking in the art of family recording/blogging (Look - I'm blogging two days in a row!  This is what progression looks like.), and I decided that I should be better about documnenting our days.
Not our special days.
Not our holidays.
Not our I-actually-took-a-shower-and-brushed-my-teeth-this-morning days.
Just our actual days.

So here is an actual day with Cameron.
(it's blurry at the beginning for some reason, but it'll sharpen up.  i promise.)

It's Half-Time

Today I am half-way there.  20 weeks behind, 20 weeks ahead.
IT'S HALF-TIME, PEOPLE.

So here's 20 facts about our #4.

#1: We don't know what you are.  It's the first time we've waited to find out and I'm secretely loving this.  Dad... not so much.

#2: I haven't had a single weird pregnancy dream yet.  Weird.

#3: I've gained 15 lbs. so far.  10 of those 15 pounds were gained in the first 8 weeks.  Self control, where art thou?!

#4: You made me throw up 4 times.  Thanks a lot.

#5: I felt you move at 17 weeks while I was driving the car home from a Dr. Appointment.  Your dad felt you a week later.

#6: I want to name you Dylan.  (Boy or Girl) Dad doesn't.  So if in 10 years you decided you want to be named Dylan, I will support that.

#7: During your ultrasound you kept your hands up by your head most the time and you were severely modest.  You kept your head turned and your legs closed. :)

#8: We do not know where to put you, my dear.  If you end up sleeping in the office closet, just know that it is no reflection of how we feel about you.

#9: I have a premonition that you'll be our most mellow child.  Please don't make me a liar.  Please.

#10: Cameron really hopes you're a boy.  The girls really hope you're a girl.

#11: You full-on gave us a thumbs-up during your ultrasound.  Back at you, buddy.
#12: Cravings so far include: Volcano Burger french fries, Mashed potatoes, green apples, Italian food of any shape/size, warm bread, steak, and C A N D Y.

#13: You are doomed to a life of hand-me downs.  Sorry.

#14: You'll have 3 cousins born with-in 5 months of you.  You lucky duck.

#15: I think your ultrasound picture makes you look the most like Brooklyn.
#16: I am hoping I can get induced with you a week early so you'll be ahead of the cut-off date for Kindergarten.  I don't know if I want you to start Kindergarten as the youngest, but I would like to have the option.

#17: I have not switched over to maternity clothes yet, but I'm rapidly running out of options in the wardrobe department.

#18: At the ultrasound, Cameron was scared because when he glanced at the screen he said you had "creepy eyes."

#19: You'll be 3 months old when  you get to meet Brendan and Braden.  And oh my, you are going to LOVE them.
#20: We are so excited to welcome you to our family.
See you in 20 weeks.

Hello again.  Not one to be left out, Aubrey will also be doing a Guest Blog Post today.  (Which is awesome, since I have about 5,000 things that I have not gotten around to posting, so this is basically glorified child labor.  Which I'm cool with.)

Guest Post #1

Hello Friends.  Today, I am taking a little break from the blog and handing the mouse and keyboard over to Brooklyn.  She thinks it's cause I'm lazy.  I think it's cause she'll do a better job than me.
So, welcome our first ever Guest Blogger, Miss Brooklyn Nicole Webb.
(This is the uncensored and uncorrected version.  100% Brooklyn, folks.)

hi i'm brooklyn.  i'm taking the blog from my mom today.  she won't let me make my own blog, so i just have to post some pictures on hers.
This day we went to a soccer game as you can see, and then we went home and played with the hose.  it was really fun but dad said we were using too much water.  so then we started playing with the soccer ball, which is floating in the air.
That day we went to Disneyland.  they got a drink without us, but we were on a ride without them so that's why.
This day we went on a plane and when the plane stopped we went to see our uncle brad. we went to the mall and we got subway and played in the play place. We had to chase Chase because he kept running away.
This day we went to orange leaf with our cousins in idaho. our team name is the taco amigos.
This day we went to orange leaf and to see Cinderella.  Cinderella had a mean step-mother, but {SPOILER ALERT} she forgave her at the very end.  the end.

When we got home we went to oak glen zoo.
Cameron fed the deer at Oak glen. they were hidden but we found them.then we went to see the lama.the lama had big teeth and he was very furry. he needs to get braces and he needs to brush his teeth.
that baby goat was so cute and so gentle and his fur was as white as snow.
that's aubrey holding the goat i think she was having fun.
that's johnny appleseeds house. we got to go inside. wo.
we went in the barn. the bunny was missing. i expected the bear ate it.
we saw this little stream. Cameron jumped over it. we jumped over it too. Cameron was a little late on the picture.
the end. thank you all who reads this.
